Background

Jamie Katz, DO, is an urgent care pediatrician at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

Dr. Katz has worked at CHOP since 2019. Her favorite part of seeing patients in urgent care is “the opportunity to meet and treat the children in our community, and to know I’m making a difference with every interaction.”

What initially drew her to pediatrics? The experience of being a pediatric hospital patient herself. “As a newborn, I required surgery at CHOP,” Dr. Katz says. “My surgeon was former U.S. Surgeon General and former CHOP Chief Surgeon C. Everett Koop, MD. My years of visits with Dr. Koop at CHOP influenced my decision to become a pediatrician.”

Dr. Katz understands the role that urgent care plays in a family’s day-to-day life. “When a child is sick or injured and the pediatrician's office is not available, urgent care can provide appropriate treatment for the patient, and peace of mind for the parent.”

What advice does she have for parents? “Trust your gut. You know your children better than anyone.”

When she’s not treating patients, Dr. Katz loves being outdoors, gardening and spending time with Maddie and Brody, her two Basset hounds.

CHOP’s pediatric Urgent Care Centers provide fast, convenient care for children and teens with non-life-threatening illnesses or injuries. Typically, these are situations when your child can’t wait until the pediatrician’s office is open, but they don’t need the resources of an emergency department (ED). Urgent Care Centers are staffed by board-certified pediatricians and pediatric nurses with expertise in caring for children with urgent healthcare needs. The facilities offer onsite X-rays and testing to help with fast diagnosis and treatment plans.
