Donating Milk Can Have Therapeutic Benefits for Bereaving Mother

Published on in CHOP News

Donor milk can save lives. Babies in the NI/ICU who are premature or have a serious health condition can greatly benefit from the immunization properties of human milk. Donating your milk to a milk bank, like the CHOP Mothers’ Milk Bank, has obvious benefits for babies — but it can also have therapeutic benefits for the mothers who donate.

Diane Spatz, PhD, RN-BC, FAAN, the director of CHOP’s Lactation Program, recently helped write an article for the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses highlighting how a mother who lost her child shortly after birth was able to donate milk as a way to work through her mourning.
