John Simpkins, MBA, Senior Director of the Physician Practice Administration and Cancer Service Line, and Chief Administrative Officer of the Cancer Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, is this year’s recipient of the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Pitcher of Hope Award. Simpkins accepted the honor during a ceremony held on May 30 in the Hub for Clinical Collaboration on CHOP’s Philadelphia campus. The award recognizes a CHOP employee who has positively impacted the field of pediatric oncology and shows extraordinary commitment for caring for children with cancer.

“John is in many ways the heart and soul of the Cancer Center,” said Stephen Hunger, MD, Chief of the Division of Oncology at CHOP. “John works tirelessly to support our team and allow us to deliver the best care possible to patients and their families. He demonstrates exceptional leadership through operational efficiencies in the Cancer Center while keeping our goals on track and supporting the growth of our team.”

For the past 10 years, Simpkins has served as Chief Administrative Officer, overseeing business growth as well as clinical and research operations at the Cancer Center. Celebrating 25 years at CHOP, Simpkins says his leadership style, motivation, and approach to leading the Cancer Center are deeply influenced by the personal experience of his mother’s battle with cancer.

Alex’s Lemonade Stand is an annual event held in conjunction with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) where CHOP hosts lemonade stands throughout its Philadelphia campus for a suggested donation. The event includes a commemorative ceremony during which the Pitcher of Hope is awarded. ALSF is named in memory of Alexandra or Alex Scott, who passed away in 2004 at the age of eight. Alex was treated at CHOP’s Cancer Center and had the initial idea to open a lemonade stand to raise funds for her doctors’ research. To date, ALSF has donated approximately $18 million to CHOP through philanthropic support and research grants. This year marks the 21st annual Alex’s Lemonade Stand at CHOP.
