Why choose the Spine Program

Why choose the Spine Program

The Spine Program is a cornerstone of the Orthopedics Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), the No. 1 ranked program in the nation on the 2023-24 U.S. News & World Report's Honor Roll of Best Children’s Hospitals.

When seeking the best possible care for your child’s spine problem, consider these factors:

  • A specialized team. Our team includes board-certified pediatric orthopedic surgeons – each with their own area of special focus among the hundreds of spine and spine-related conditions treated at CHOP.
  • The latest tools for diagnostic testing. We offer a full spectrum of diagnostic testing, including new technologies – such as EOS imaging, dynamic MRI and cartilage mapping – in addition to standard technologies like X-rays, MRI and CT scans.
  • State-of-the-art facilities. Our state-of-the-art operating rooms use cutting-edge navigation and imaging equipment during surgery, and we provide continuous anesthesia and surgical monitoring.
  • Focus on safety. Enhanced safety protocols before, during, and after spine surgery decrease the risk of infection and create positive outcomes for patients.
  • The full spectrum of care. While our surgical offerings are extensive, we know it’s important to explore all non-surgical options when it comes to treating your child’s spine condition. That’s why we focus on non-invasive treatment options first—whenever possible—including bracing, physical and occupational therapy, athletic training, and sports nutrition when appropriate. Transition-to-adult-care programs are also available for youth who need continued medical monitoring into adulthood.
  • Access to pediatric sub-specialists. We provide expertise and resources in every pediatric subspecialty your child might need depending on their unique situation, including oncology, genetics, radiology, pulmonology and others.
  • Easy, convenient access to the care you need. Inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services are available on CHOP’s Philadelphia Campus. We offer patient examinations, testing, and certain treatments at multiple locations throughout CHOP’s Care Network, as well as follow-up care at multiple CHOP-affiliated locations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Transition-to-adult-care programs are also available for youth who need continued medical monitoring into adulthood.

By sharing our surgical knowledge, clinical experience and innovative research, our Spine Program offers a depth and breadth of experience treating spine conditions that is unparalleled in the region.
