What to Expect During Your Adolescent Gynecology Visit
How we care for your daughter — and which other specialists may be involved in her care — is determined by her diagnosis and the specific services she needs.
For most teens, an adolescent medicine specialist typically does her initial evaluation and management of care. More complicated cases, or those requiring surgery, will be referred directly to Monica Mainigi, MD, our adolescent gynecologist at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).
For cases requiring complex surgery that cannot be performed at CHOP, our gynecology team may coordinate with surgeons at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, right next door to CHOP's Main Hospital.
Our approach to care
Many of the diseases we treat require a coordinated approach. This means we work closely with other pediatric services at CHOP, such as endocrinology, dermatology, gastroenterology, pediatric surgery, and urology. Our patients also have access to a social worker and nurses who specialize in the care of young adults.
We welcome parents and caregivers as key partners in supporting your daughter's care. To help young women learn to develop skills for being responsible for their own health, we usually will ask to spend time alone with your daughter during each visit. This helps your daughter become comfortable talking with her healthcare providers about her concerns. It also allows her to ask questions that may be more difficult to express in front of her parents or caregivers.
We respect the privacy and confidentiality of our patients while ensuring that your daughter is safe and connected to the appropriate services and resources she needs.
