Phillip B. Storm, MD

Phillip B. Storm, M.D. is the Leslie N. Sutton Professor and Chief of the Division of Neurosurgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), Director of the Center for Data-Driven Discovery in Biomedicine (D3b), and Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery. An internationally recognized pediatric neurosurgeon, he specializes in brain and spine tumors and is a leader in endoscopic skull base surgery. His pioneering techniques have improved surgical outcomes while minimizing morbidity.

Dr. Storm earned his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society. He completed his residency in neurological surgery and a fellowship in neuro-oncology research at Johns Hopkins Hospital, followed by a pediatric neurosurgery fellowship at CHOP in 2003. He joined the faculty at CHOP and the University of Pennsylvania in 2004.

Beyond his clinical expertise, Dr. Storm has played a transformative role in pediatric brain tumor research. Under his leadership, the Children's Brain Tumor Network (CBTN) expanded from a four-hospital collaboration to a 35-institution international consortium committed to real-time, open-data sharing. In 2016, he co-founded D3b with Adam Resnick, Ph.D., and helped launch CAVATICA, a cloud-based biomedical data analysis platform that originated as part of the White House Precision Medicine Initiative. His work has been published in Cell, Science, The New England Journal of Medicine, and Nature Genetics.

Dr. Storm is also committed to education and mentorship. He co-developed a cancer curriculum with a local high school, providing students with hands-on experience using D3b’s platforms. In collaboration with Amazon Web Services, he is now working to scale this program to Philadelphia’s inner-city high schools.

Dr. Storm lives in Center City, Philadelphia, with his wife, Stacey, and their two children, Anna and George.
