Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia offers a three-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship designed to train future leaders in Pediatric Hospital Medicine. We accept two fellows per year.
During the first 6 months of the fellowship, applicants will select their area of focus from the three available fellowship tracks:
- Quality Improvement, Patient Safety and Medical Operations
- Medical Education
Each track includes completion of a master's degree at the University of Pennsylvania during the fellowship.

About the fellowship
We adhere to the Curricular Framework for Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowships published by the Council of Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship Directors.
The first year of fellowship is similar for fellows on all tracks and is designed to take already exceptional residents/general pediatricians and focus on developing them into clinical experts in pediatric hospital medicine. Training focuses on clinical experiences that are intensively mentored by leaders in the field, with opportunities in inpatient general pediatrics, complex care, co-management, assessment and stabilization of the critically ill child, and newborn care.
The first year also includes broad exposures to quality improvement, patient safety, medical operations, informatics, research, and medical education.
The second and third years of fellowship are track-specific and include in-depth exposure to the area of focus selected, as well as Master's level training at the University of Pennsylvania, just steps away from CHOP.
- The Quality Improvement, Patient Safety and Medical Operations track is run in partnership with the CHOP Office for Clinical Quality Improvement and the Center for Healthcare Improvement and Patient Safety (CHIPS) at the University of Pennsylvania, and includes a Master's in Health Policy Research with special coursework in quality improvement and patient safety.
- The Research track is run in partnership with the CHOP Center for Pediatric Clinical Effectiveness and the Pediatric Hospital Epidemiology and Outcomes Training (PHEOT) program, and includes a master's in Clinical Epidemiology, or a master's in Health Policy Research.
- The Medical Education track is run in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education's Master's in Med Ed program.

How to apply
The PHM Fellowship is participating in ERAS as of 2022. In addition to your application, please be sure to upload a separate document of approximately 250 words to the ERAS website letting us know which track or tracks seem to be the best fit for you, and how focusing in that area during fellowship will shape your future career. During the first year of fellowship, program leadership and your mentors will help you make the final decision based on your evolving interests. Potential applicants must:
- Be a graduate of a U.S. or Canadian medical school or possess an ECFMG certificate and eligible J1 or H1B visa status
- Have completed pediatric residency training in an ACGME-accredited program
- Be eligible for board certification in Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics
Recruitment is underway for fellows starting in July 2023. Interviews will be offered beginning August 15. We suggest you turn in the application as early as possible.
Interviews will take place in the fall in preparation for the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Pediatric Specialties Match in December.

To carry out its mission, it is of critical importance for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to keep our patients, families and workforce safe and healthy and to support the health of our global community.
