About the Recovery and Return Clinic

The R2 Clinic will provide a team to support your child and family after your child recovers from a PICU stay. Your R2 Clinic team will get to know your family while your child is in the PICU, check on you throughout the rest of your hospital stay, and provide telephone check-ups and in-person clinic check-ins in the month after your child has been discharged from the hospital.

The R2 Clinic occurs on Thursday afternoons in CHOP’s Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care. An appointment will be scheduled for your child approximately 4 weeks after discharge from the hospital.

You will receive an email and a telephone call before the R2 Clinic appointment. We will ask you to answer questions and complete a survey over the telephone and through MyCHOP before the appointment to help our team prepare for your child’s visit.

Recovery and return to school, work and life routines after hospitalization in the PICU takes time. The R2 Clinic is here to support you as your family recovers.

How will the R2 Clinic help your family?

The road to recovery and returning to routines after cardiac arrest and critical illness can be challenging. Our team is here to help your family and provide resources as you navigate this journey.

The R2 will help you and your child manage:

  • Physical mobility
  • Endurance
  • Attention and concentration
  • Organizational skills
  • Memory
  • Behavior changes
  • School adjustment problems

We work closely with other team members including social work, school liaisons, and subspecialists (i.e., Cardiac Center, Division of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine, Department of Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Neuropsychology, Neurology), and therapists (Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Neuropsychology, Rehabilitation and Department of Speech-Language Pathology).

The R2 Clinic does not replace seeing other specialists. Your child’s R2 Clinic appointment occurs approximately a month after their hospital discharge.

Some families will be asked to return to the R2 clinic after their initial visit, while others will be referred to subspecialists for follow-up care. Your pediatrician and other specialists will provide ongoing care to your child as needed.
