PHL ED Notified of Potential Influx of Patients
- Consider utilizing PHL Evolving Incident Comm Secure Chat group for situational awareness
- Determine number of patients to accept
- Charge RN and Team 1 Attending can increase or decrease numbers as needed:
- 5 Red Critical, life threatening injury or illness
- 20 Yellow Serious injury or illness but stable
- 40 Green Minor injury or illness
- By Team 1 Attending and Charge RN
- Consider physician and nurse staffing, bed availability, trauma level/known injuries, degree of stabilization at OSH, estimated time of arrivals, and time of day/day of week
- Emergency Preparedness On-Call available to provide guidance
- Secure Chat: Emerg Prep Escalate 1st Contact, Groups
- Notify Emergency Preparedness On-Call if sending MCI Alert
Multiple Patient Event (MPE) Standby Alert
Vague initial reports lacking details
- Concern for 3–7 seriously ill/injured children
- Additional internal resources required from ED and select departments outside the ED
- Concern for ≥ 8 seriously ill/injured children
- Requires enterprise-wide response, external resources
- Staff, space, supply
- Requires enterprise-wide response, external resources
Activate Appropriate Alert
Use 4CODE to contact Communication Specialists to send appropriate Everbridge alert
Initiate ED Team Huddle Outside Resuscitation Room
Team 1 Attending and/or Charge RN sends Secure Chat to PHL ED Leaders to request that they huddle immediately in Team 1
Standby
- Consider asking staff whose shift is ending to remain in the hospital until further information is available
Guidance for Multiple Patient Event
- ED and supporting departments assume MPE roles
- Print or hand out pre-printed copies of role specific job aids
Guidance for Mass Casualty Incident
- All departments assume MCI roles
- Print or hand out pre-printed copies of role specific job aids
Cancellation of Standby Alert
- Notify Communication Specialist to cancel the standby alert
Upgrade to MPE or MCI
- Notify Communication Specialist to upgrade alert to:
Command Center Opened by Emergency Preparedness (x47300)
- Coordinate information between external sources and CHOP ED MCI team
- Coordinate needs with ED Physician in Charge, ED Charge Nurse and ED Resource Nurse
