About Peter J. Madsen, MD, MBE

As a Pediatric Neurosurgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, I have the privilege of treating children and young adults with various conditions of the brain, spine, and peripheral nervous system. I have a broad interest in all aspects of pediatric neurosurgery and provide surgical care for patients with tumors of the brain and spinal cord, congenital spine disorders, craniofacial abnormalities, hydrocephalus, traumatic brain and spine injuries, and tumors of the peripheral nervous system. I strive for a collaborative approach to decision-making as I work closely with patients and their families to find the best possible surgical or non-surgical treatments for their conditions.

I have a particular interest in the care of children and young adults with brain tumors, such as medulloblastoma, ependymoma, AT/RT, diffuse midline glioma, and low-grade glioma. I collaborate with my colleagues in the Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Program at CHOP to treat children and young adults with these challenging diseases. Whether I am caring for a patient with a newly diagnosed brain tumor or meeting with a family seeking a second opinion, the goal is always to achieve the best outcome in the safest way possible that maximizes a patient’s chances for long-term health and happiness. Whenever possible, we strive to use the most advanced and minimally invasive techniques, including microsurgery, endoscopic surgery, and laser interstitial thermal ablation.

While surgery is an important part of the care for patients with brain tumors, it is essential that our team investigate and develop new and comprehensive brain tumor therapies. I spend much of my time pursuing research efforts to develop new, targeted treatments that will hopefully one day spare children from risks of surgery and the side-effects of currently available treatments. I have a particular interest in bringing developments in the field of immunotherapy to the treatment of children and young adults with brain tumors. Through various grants and collaborative partnerships with CHOP neuro-oncologists, I direct laboratory efforts testing CAR-T cell therapies for multiple types of pediatric brain tumors with the hope of translating these approaches into clinical trials.

As a parent myself, I appreciate the level of trust that parents must place in a surgeon when their child needs pediatric neurosurgical care. I am so fortunate to be a part of an incredible team of doctors, nurses, therapists, and support staff at CHOP who are united in providing exceptional care for our patients. This team-based approach that puts children and their families at the center of their care makes all the difference, allowing us to provide the highest quality treatment with compassion and dedication.
