About Thomas P. Swaffield, MD, FAAP, CAQSM
Thomas Swaffield MD, FAAP, CAQSM, is a pediatric Sports Medicine specialist within the Orthopedic Center and Sports Medicine and Performance Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). He provides comprehensive care to pediatric, adolescent, and young adult patients. He treats patients with orthopedic injuries, concussions, and performs ultrasound-guided procedures.
Dr. Swaffield is a board-certified pediatrician with a certificate of added qualifications in primary care sports medicine (CAQSM). He completed medical school at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, his pediatric residency at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and his fellowship in Sports Medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
During his fellowship at CHOP, Dr. Swaffield treated patients in the office and provided sideline medical coverage for athletes at the high school, collegiate and professional level, as well as at events like the Philadelphia Love Run and the Penn Relays.
Dr. Swaffield is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and the Pediatric Research in Sports Medicine Society. He is actively engaged in research projects pertaining to sports medicine. He frequently lectures on a variety of topics relevant to the pediatric and young adult athlete. He enjoys teaching medical students, residents, and fellows interested in sports medicine.
