Why Choose CHOP for Cystic Fibrosis Care

Why Choose CHOP for Cystic Fibrosis Care

Your child will need ongoing care for their cystic fibrosis (CF) from childhood through young adulthood, making your choice of care team an important decision for your family.

The Cystic Fibrosis Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is here for you, with experts in all the specialties your child may need. The center’s clinical outcomes have been consistently outstanding for many years.

The CF Center is one of several specialized centers within CHOP's Division of Pulmonary Medicine, which is ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the top pulmonary programs in the country year after year.

Recognized by the CF Foundation

In addition, the center is fully accredited for care, teaching and research by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and has been described by the foundation as “a truly outstanding program, which can serve as a model for all academic cystic fibrosis programs.”

The center was selected as the recipient of the annual Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's Quality Care Award: Recognizing Outstanding QI Processes and Accomplishments. To be considered for the award, an organization must:

  • Show sustained quality improvement work that improved outcomes
  • Use clinical outcomes data to identify opportunities for improvement
  • Document results of improvement efforts
  • Involve patients and families in identifying, designing and implementing improvement efforts
  • Employ innovative strategies to improve care processes and outcomes
  • Implement system changes that result in high reliability of care processes

Numerous specialists with CF expertise

Depending on your child's needs, our CF Center's pediatric pulmonologists, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, nutritionists, advanced practice nurses, physical therapists, psychologists, and social workers will care for them.

If your child and family need them, we have knowledgeable genetic counselors, interventional radiologists, physical therapists, pharmacologists, and respiratory technologists available. Transplant surgeons and their teams can perform both liver and lung transplants for candidates.

The progressive path of CF and keeping up with daily medication and chest therapies can be stressful for your child and the entire family. Our psychologist and social worker are experienced in providing support and counseling to help everyone better cope and work through issues as they arise.

CHOP's CF Center also partners with the adult program at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. When your child becomes a young adult, they can seamlessly transition from our program to Penn's.
