Post Pancreatectomy Clinic

Children who have had their pancreases removed to treat hyperinsulinism are at risk for diabetes and pancreatic insufficiency. To monitor these patients, the Congenital Hyperinsulinism Center created a special Post Pancreatectomy Clinic so families can conveniently see specialists from Endocrinology, Gastroenterology and Nutrition in one location during one appointment. The specialists collaborate to ensure each child’s needs are met.

The clinic is held six times a year, generally on the second Monday of the month, in the Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care, seventh floor.

What to expect

All patients will be seen by a provider from Endocrinology, Gastroenterology (GI) and Nutrition. For a child’s first appointment at the clinic, the providers from Endocrinology and GI will spend 45 to 60 minutes with the family. For follow-up appointments, the family will be with each provider approximately 30 minutes each. All nutrition appointments will be 45 minutes.

New patients and follow up appointments

Families who have not been treated at CHOP before are welcome to attend the clinic. To schedule a new patient or follow up appointment, call 215-590-3174, pressing option #1, and request assistance from the hypoglycemia nurse coordinator. You will need to fill out a Welcome Form in MyCHOP and send your child’s medical records to the HI Center prior to your child’s first appointment. Records can be faxed to 215-590-3053. We will provide more details on the intake process for new patients when you are scheduling your appointment.
