Holiday Workshop Recap of CHOPed: Mastering the Renal Diet

Published on

Group photo of kids in the kitchen The Division of Nephrology hosted a half-day, renal-friendly holiday cooking workshop on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018. This workshop was designed to increase awareness of the renal diet and teach patients living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and their families to make healthier food choices.

Patients and families cooked all American meatloaf, cauliflower with garlic, couscous with vegetables, dinner yeast rolls, cream cheese thumbprint cookies, and hot apple cider.

75 percent of families in attendance reported the session made them more aware of healthy eating. Some of the key themes learned included portion control and teamwork. Unanimously, the group reported that they:

  • Had an opportunity to meet other kids at CHOP similar to them
  • Would refer friends to the workshop
  • Were willing to return again
  • Will prepare kidney-friendly recipes in the future
