Home Cook Heroes is a program at Gift of Life Family House which provides home-cooked meals to transplant families staying at the Family House while their loved ones are being cared for in a local hospital.

The Family House, located at 401 Callowhill Street in Philadelphia, provides lodging for many of the families of transplant patients we care for here at CHOP. The home cooking is done by local groups who want to offer their time and talents to families needing some relief after a long day at the hospital.

CHOP Nephrology has been honored to participate in this program — the first time last fall where a Thanksgiving-inspired meal was prepared, and more recently, in early July, a cook-out for the approximately 50 family members staying at the house.

What a great way to spend a summer evening. The families seemed to really enjoy the grilled kabobs, salads and delicious desserts — all prepared by Nephrology staff including physicians, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, administrators and more. And staff enjoyed the opportunity to meet with families in an informal atmosphere at the House.
